Open Cell insulation takes a lighter ‘foamier’ texture than its counterpart - closed cell insulation takes a more rigid format

Both foams are excellent insulators. Both have uses in DIFFERENT types of buildings. For instance A quality for ClosedCell foam is that it is a vapor barrier, conversely,  a quality in OpenCell Foam is that it is NOT a vapor barrier!! SO which is better? We are local to Cavan Fermanagh - Monaghan and Tyrone, an can easily visit and talk it through with you to get the RIGHT Sprayfoam insulation for your building.

Closed-cell polyurethane spray foam is one of the most efficient insulating materials commercially available. Closed-cell foam incorporates an insulating gas that is retained within the cells referred to as the blowing agent, which leads to the highly efficient insulating properties of the material. Also, as this foam is closed-cell it provides a highly effective air barrier, low moisture vapour permeability and excellent resistance to water.

The most common foam density for closed-cell polyurethane foam is approximately 41 kg/m. Closed-cell polyurethane foams are usually characterized by their rigidity and strength, in addition to the high R-Value. Also, studies show that wall racking strength can by doubled or tripled when closed cell foam is applied.

Due to the cell structure of closed cell foam; they have a low vapor permeance and may be considered a vapor retarder depending on the thickness and is used in exterior spray foam insulation applications.

Commercial spray foam usually use closed cell spray foam for industrial buildings, roofs and exterior insulation, giving a perfect seal against any problems such like draughts, moisture and rotting.

  • Excellent adhesion to substrate
  • Energy savings of up to 70%
  • Prevents thermal bridges
  • It reduces or eliminates heat transfer through building structures
  • Healthier living
  • Perfect airtight and vapor barrier
  • Reduces the cost of heating / cooling
  • Environmentally-friendly
  • Does not support mold growth.

OpenCell Foam

It offers excellent acoustic properties and is a good type insulation for soundproofing and noise reduction. Open cell foam is a quality thermal insulation that will not sag or rot and needs no maintenance.

  • Is Not A Urea formaldehyde based foam
  • No vapor barrier
  • Environmentally Safe
  • Excellent Noise Reduction
  • Does Not Compress or Settle
  • No Thermal Degradation

Open-cell foam is not used for exterior applications. It is cost effective per unit of U-value without providing structural contribution to a building that closed-cell foams offer.

It is used for attic insulation, wall cavities and domestic insulation in the home mainly.
